About

Greetings ,

The name is pronounced [Cax. Me] but my friends call me Cax. Mama Càx is my blogger alter ego. This is a blog focusing on my travels, my love for food and fashion.

MY STORY

I was born in Brooklyn in 1989 but was raised in Montreal & Haiti. At the age of 14 I was diagnosed with bone & lung cancer- I was given 3 weeks to live but beat the odds with an experimental drug and luck. Surviving cancer came with a price; I had my right leg ampuated. Today I walk with a prosthetic leg along with two forearm crutches.

At 17, I traveled to Costa Rica and have never been able to get rid of the traveler’s bug. Since then, I have been to 25 countries throughout 5 continents.

TRAVEL: I’ve tried blogging many times but failed, at some point, I decided I was more into photoblogging and started caxmee.tumblr.com to share my travel pictures. There are countless travel blogs and it can be overwhelming to look through blogs that are sharing the same stories (travel itineraries etc..)

I got the idea to start Mama Cax when I backpacked through South East Asia in 2013. I use crutches and when I travel I like to bring a couple of extra crutch tips (rubber tips at the base of the crutches). Thailand is one of the top producers of rubber meaning packing 6 pairs of crutch tips all the way across the world was so unnecessary & this made me realize that the world doesn’t need more bloggers. It needs more bloggers with unique experiences. My plan is to have a travel blog sharing my experience as a woman, as a person of color and as a person with a physical disability.

FOOD: Simply put I’m a foodie. food has probably allowed me to make some of the toughest decisions in life.  I made the decision to study in Italy for the pasta and the Gelato. when I had my first plate of Pad Thai, I knew I was destined to explore Thailand. Even my friends know  a promise to buy me food is the only way to get me out of bed in the winter.

LIFESTYLE/FASHION: I also couldn’t ignore my undeniable love for fashion. Being bionic can’t possibly be boring. I muse for Fanm Djanm , a headwrap company owned by Paola Mathé . Occasionally get featured on fashion blogs & magazines.

I haven’t been too content about the mainstream imagery of beauty. I’ve made it my personal mission to infiltrate the “beauty industry”- Walking  down the street with crutches and a prosthetic leg, people often shout “you go girl! you’re still beautiful” STILL?…. I AM beautiful and I’m here to show you how beautiful I am inside and out.

  8. As a fellow amputee I admire your attitude. Fortunately for me I am a below knee amp so I only lost five toes and an ankle which isn’t a disability its an inconvenience! Don’t you just love the new technology in limbs?
